Typeface Design : Prabal

Project Duration: 10 Weeks
Project Guide: Tarun Deep Girdhar

Developing Contemporary Display Typeface for Gujarati Script. It was created as a part of design project at NID.

About the project

There are thousands of typefaces for the Roman script and hundreds more keep adding every year. However, there is less number of typefaces available for the indic script, and even the lesser number for the typeface with the open type features. There is a need for new typefaces to diversify the typographic expressions of the language. In designing a Gujarati typeface, I also have the advantage of being a native Gujarati speaker and writer.

Gujarati is the language spoken predominantly in the state of Gujarat. It is more than 700 years old and is spoken by more than 55 million people worldwide. The Gujarati script is derived from the Devanagari script which has its roots in Brahmi. Over time, the Shirorekha was dropped to adapt to the requirement of writing at rapid speeds for the purpose of account-keeping and letter-writing. This, later, became the basis for the modern Gujarati script, after which it was adopted by writers of manuscripts and religious hand-written publications.

Traditional calligraphy practice: To make a typeface, the study of the original script was necessary. I started with the traditional calligraphy practice of the Gujarati script.

Handwriting Samples: I took handwriting samples of students and teachers with the help of my parents. The handwriting samples had distinctive features like the straight ending of kana, flat matra, and extra curvy letters or italic style with straight endings of terminals.

While I was doing calligraphy practice, I started collecting samples of all forms of Gujarati type. I divided them into this category: Wall text, Signboards, Packaging, Publication, Digital form, and Calligraphy

Here are some of the collected pictures. The pictures were collected from various sources including my guide Tarun Deep Girdhar

Selection of a style

After doing the research about what contemporary style is and how people interpret it. I finalized the keywords for my style and started exploring in the direction.

Letter construction

I started constructing the letters from the selected style. I went through a few versions before I selected the final one. I started the process by defining the root letters and then start constructing a few key characters and after finalizing them I started constructing remaining letters. Here is the example of a few changes I made during the finalizing process.

Final Version

After a lot of changes, exploration, testings, and revisions, these shapes were selected as the final and I started the further process of creating the marks and conjoint. In between, I also started kerning between all the possible combination of the letters. Kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters.
